As the story goes, Jorma Kaukonen, before he plugged in as lead guitarist in Jefferson Airplane, was nicknamed Blind Lemon Jefferson Airplane by a folkie friend\u2014a term that referenced the great country blues figure of the1920s and updated it with a surreal twist.\u00a0Like the best names for the folk rock and psychedelic groups of the later 1960s, \u201cJefferson Airplane\u201d offered a doubled sense of esoteric reference and (often ironic) absurdity.\u00a0 If Shirley Ellis scored a hit with \u201cThe Name Game,\u201d the San Francisco bands played the Game of the Name.\u00a0 Big Brother & The Holding Company spliced the dystopian fantasy of George Orwell\u2019s 1984\u00a0<\/em>with the dystopian reality of what Eisenhower had termed the \u201cmilitary-industrial (aka corporate) complex.\u201d\u00a0 And Tongue & Groove torqued a carpentry term (wink wink) into a several-dimensioned metaphor\u2014a pun for fun?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

There were, of course, names (often the ones coined by record company execs imitating what they didn\u2019t understand trying to pass for \u201cwith it\u201d to capture market share and move some product) that are, let\u2019s face it, pretty dumb.\u00a0 While Iron Butterfly isn\u2019t as rich a text as Big Brother & The Holding Company, at least it juxtaposes contrasting qualities.\u00a0 The same can\u2019t be said of The Strawberry Alarm Clock, though their single was catchy, and perhaps that group and The Peanut Butter Conspiracy (more of an actual band and a better name) might be put between toast for breakfast.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

So, what about \u201cThe Name Game\u201d?\u00a0 First, to the best of my knowledge, there was never a band named Derridean Debris, and I can, unequivocally, state that I never played or sang in such a band (even though a note at the back of Reimagining Textuality: Textual Studies in the Late Age of Print <\/em>claims otherwise).\u00a0 That said, if one were looking for “deconstructive” rock, I think that would be more The Troggs and “Wild Thing” than some post mods riffing Grammatology.\u00a0 And while Led Zeppelin did record a song titled \u201cMoby Dick,\u201d I don\u2019t think anyone posing as Moby Dick ever fronted a band dubbed The Seamen (though what great opportunities for costuming and staging! Would have put Paul Revere and The Raiders, with their Revolutionary War tricorn hats and frilly jackets, truly to shame).\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

So, if you\u2019ve drifted over here from your avidly read copy of Ticket Stubs & Liner Notes<\/em> and really do care to know which bands in \u201cThe Name Game\u201d are real and which flat out faux, in the text below the actual bands are in bold,<\/strong> the fakes in italics<\/em>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

(And lastly for the younger set, a bit of \u201chistory\u201d that\u2019s perhaps worth noting.\u00a0 In that once upon a time of the Sixties, oregano was often peddled to na\u00efve young customers who thought they were paying for what has since become legal in a few states but wasn\u2019t then.\u00a0 One evening in Napa, 1967? 1968?, some eager teens were happily toking away when the police arrived and took them off to jail.\u00a0 I\u2019ve often wondered whether the police were more embarrassed that they\u2019d seized a lid of oregano or whether the kids were more embarrassed at the groovy high they thought they were enjoying.\u00a0 Ah, yes, Oregano Doobie.)<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
